Cohesion and Adhesion

Post by lyenrose » Tue Feb 21, 2012 12:25 am

Hello,

My name is Emily and I'm currently studying at Australia- Pacific Technical College doing Certificate III in Painting and Interior Decorating. I'm really happy to be doing this course and its an exciting experience as I learn that there is more to painting than brush and paint.

I'm also happy to be on this forum because I would learn more and expand my knowledge about paint and things involved with it.

Anyways, I just wanted to ask a question about cohesion and adhesion; What is the basic difference between the two?

I'd love to get a reply soon :D

Emily

Thank you for your question regarding adhesion and cohesion and the difference between these terms. Adhesion or bonding strength is the attraction of the coating or coating system to the substrate.
Cohesion on the other hand is the property of holding self together that is the individual coats within a painting sysyem.

In short, adhesion applies to the total painting system containing a number of coats adhering or sticking to the substrate whereas cohesion refers to the individual coats within the painting system sticking together.
