WORK WANTED - Painting Apprenticeship (Adelaide)

Post by Bridgemat » Thu May 03, 2012 11:13 am

Career Objective
To obtain an Apprenticeship in Painting and Decorating which will enable me to enhance my existing skills by joining an organisation that prides itself on it’s work and commitment to excellence.

With my 40th birthday fast approaching I fit into the mature aged apprentice bracket which means I am eligible for government subsidy on my wages making my salary to the employer the same as a junior whilst they have the advantage of my maturity and wealth of experience.

Personal Profile
I am a proactive, dedicated, energetic person who is very detail focused, takes pride in managing tasks and projects effectively. I fit into any situation easily as I am able to effectively adapt myself to the environment whilst ensuring all deadlines and expectations are not only met but exceeded.

With a vast range of experience in senior management roles including finance and hospitality, I have been privileged to have achieved many goals and milestones over my career and have worked with amazing organisations and wonderful people. After the birth of my son Matthew, who has just celebrated his 2nd birthday and attends full-time child care, I carefully considered my future career options to ensure they were a good fit for Matthew and I.

As the daughter of a Brick Layer I have enjoyed growing up on the building site (I was given my first trowel before I started school) and I have utilised this experience to develop my practical skills along with the acquisition, renovation, rental and sale of 6 properties. I have project managed and physically worked closely alongside both my father and step dad, who is a handy man, to renovate all 6 properties I have purchased plus properties I have rented. I have my own reliable car, full driver's license and am experienced in driving vans and large 4 wheel drives.

Although Painting and Decorating is a career change for me it feels more like the return to my core values as I understand the value of hard work, I am reliable, committed, polite, well spoken and am always willing to give my all to my job. I am passionate about Painting and Decorating and it is something I have always done as I really enjoy the “before and after” aspect of the work. I love seeing my hard work show such amazing transformational results.

Skills Summary • Painting and Decorating -- Whitecard, Working at Heights, Proficient with Surface Preparation, Cutting In, Plaster and Plaster Board Repairs, Hand Painting, Rolling, Site Cleanliness, Project Management, Interacting with other trades and Supervising Teams.
• Communications -- Excellent written and verbal presentation skills including formal qualifications as a published writer, corporate trainer and public speaker.
• Interpersonal Skills -- Able to get along well with co-workers and accept supervision whilst also being able to work unsupervised and be responsible for managing others and outcomes.
• Flexible -- Willing to try new things, take direction from others and am interested in improving efficiency on assigned tasks.
• Attention to Detail -- Concerned with quality. Produce work that is orderly and attractive. Ensure tasks are completed correctly and on time.
• Hard-working -- Have always worked in excess of 50 + hours per week both in primary roles and parallel careers including business and investments whilst maintaining sporting, further education, professional development and networking committments.
• Customer Service & KPI’s -- Have always meet or exceeded KPI’s for customer service and have achieved many records for sales volume both individually and as department head.

What a great promotion. If I had a business in Australia I would give you a go because of your enthusiasm, initiative, and motivation.

This post sets a good example to others that are keen to work, I am going to show it my students here in Fiji as an example of the type of attitude that they could display to gain employment and to appreciate the training they are receiving.

Thanks so much Michael.

I read about your work and think that what you are doing is amazing.. Please pass on my respect to your students who have continued to show up to learn even with domestic issues.. I admire their persistance..

Once I am sorted and have begun my apprenticeship would love to bring my son for a visit to see your work and meet your students.

Blessings..

That is indeed a great advert for promoting yourself, what I recommend you do is print it out on good quality A4 paper, and adding your address on the top right and on the top left add the address of different local business'. Sign them off with a "i look forward to hearing from you, yours sincerely, YOUR NAME HERE" and then sign it with a pen.
You then go dress up smartly and go hand deliver them to every single painting and decorating company you can find (internet, word of mouth, yellow pages, etc), and then hope for a response!
If you need tips for interviews, other apprenticeships, etc, i recommend visiting the following resources:

http://www.fairwork.gov.au/Pages/default.aspx
http://www.matureageapprenticeships.org
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-mature+painter/k01

That third one could also be very helpful for you, you can put your own "looking for work" advert there, gumtree is a popular website and some people have ads there, which means it must work?

Best of luck my friend. I don't usually comment on forums but I felt that I could help you. I hope I get good karma now! haha

Best of luck :D

Thank you so much. We think alike. I have also placed a "work wanted" ad on gumtree and have done an internet search for painters & decorators and all the variations on google and sent personalised applications.

Feedback so far has been great but the market is tight.

I will check out the sites you have recommended.

Here's to paying it forward.

:) excellent, i wish you all the best, write back here if you manage to find something! and let me know how that ad worked on gumtree, i've never done one, but because I saw many adverts up I assumed it would work! I'd be curious to find out myself!

All the best my friend

Hi,

Gumtree has not yet had a response but I am off on Day 2 of work experience today and may have a job at the end of it.. Fingers and toes crossed.

I found the best response was from doing a google search and sending them an email with my resume and offering to do work experience. Have 2 days booked tomorrow too.

Will keep you posted.
